When the 1835 New York City financial district was destroyed by a wildfire, the President of Hartford Fire Insurance Company, Eliphalet Terry, traveled to the city and assured policyholders their claims would be paid. Then, as catastrophe struck New York, Eliphalet Terry of Connecticut made one masterstroke. In a single year, and one masterstroke, Connecticuts Eliphalet Terry transformed the town of Hartford into the insurance capital of the world.

After finding that the existing Connecticut Fire Insurance Company was not enough to satisfy the demands of commercial expansion of the state, 137 business and civic leaders in the metropolitan area, led by Thomas C.
